How to approach your conversation
Your goal is to understand what this path is really like and whether it fits you — not to get general advice.
Start with context (2–3 minutes)
- What you're currently doing (school, job, stage in life)
- What career paths or roles you're considering
- What you're genuinely unsure or uncertain about
Ask high-signal questions
What is the job actually like?
- What does a typical day or week look like for you?
- What takes up most of your time — is that what you expected?
- What kinds of problems do you spend most of your energy solving?
Lifestyle and day-to-day reality
- How much control do you have over your schedule?
- What does work-life balance actually look like in this role?
- How stressful is the work, and what drives that stress?
- How often do you bring work home mentally, even when you're off?
Tradeoffs (most important)
- What do you give up to do this work?
- What would someone hate about this job that might surprise people?
- What parts of the role do people underestimate before starting?
- If you could change one thing about your career path, what would it be?
Fit
- What kind of person tends to thrive in this role?
- What personality traits or working styles don't fit well here?
- Looking back, what made you well-suited — or not — for this path?
What people get wrong
- What do outsiders misunderstand most about this career?
- What did you believe before starting that turned out to be wrong?
- What's the biggest misconception people have when they're considering this path?
Career path
- How did you get into this role — what was your path?
- What does growth look like from here?
- What would you do differently if you were starting over?
Make it personal
- Is there anything about my background or situation that seems like a good fit — or a potential challenge — for this path?
- What would you tell someone in my position who's seriously considering this?
Get better answers
- Ask for specific examples — "Can you walk me through a time when that happened?"
- Follow up with "why?" — it unlocks the reasoning behind surface answers
- Dig into anything surprising — if something catches you off guard, explore it
Close strong
- What's one thing you wish you knew before starting this career?
- Is there someone else you'd recommend I talk to?
